SAAB 900 Turbo Cabriolet | Bōsōzoku Style

Avid readers of Speedhunters and Japanese Nostalgic Car are familiar with the Japanese outlaw groups called 暴走族 (Bōsōzoku) and their tastefully modified vehicles. Most common base for building such vehicles are 1980’s JDM rear wheel drive sedans and coupés. However, if the owner has identified potential for an idea, just about any car might be used as a starting point and customized in one of these particular styles

A friend recently challenged me to create a Bōsōzoku inspired photoshop chop. Instead of resorting to the popular base vehicles, I opted to start with the least likely vehicle to be modified in this outrageous style: a safe and sensible Swedish SAAB 900 Turbo Cabriolet. SAAB could be ordered with three spoke alloys from the factory and therefore Yokohama Super Advan wheels suit perfectly. Converting this classic and throwing all the visual key elements into the mix was hilarious fun. Based on the prototype of the convertible, my interpretation of a Swedish Bōsōzoku vehicle includes many elements of Shakotan, Grachan and Bōsōzoku styles. Modified bonnet, oil cooler with externally routed oil lines, custom made sideskirts and massive front splitter, classic JDM fender mirrors, riveted overfenders and wonderfully tacky exhaust setup mounted in an unusual location. But because this is still a Swedish car, there are warnings stenciled onto the pipes. Safety first!

[Disclaimer: This picture was created without any serious thoughts. No SAAB was harmed in the process.]

A good friend of mine recently complained that most of my photoshop chops are side-view only. That is true, because I have more ideas than time and 3/4 view pictures need a lot more time to finish properly than the simpler side-view pictures.

Porsche 911 Turbo 930 | photoshop chop by Sebastian Motsch (2018)

Porsche 911 Turbo (930)

For this picture I challenged myself to a limit of ten modifications maximum. So, let’s see how it went. I started with a plain silver Porsche 911 Turbo (930), which I wanted to stand out but still be somewhat subtle at the same time. Not too easy to achieve, but according to friends who already commented on it, I pretty much nailed it. Here is a list of the changes I made with photoshop:

  1. Substantial lowering
  2. Zender Turbo II wheels
  3. idlers tire stencils
  4. Front lip modified with a larger splitter
  5. USDM sidemarkers front
  6. USDM taillights
  7. 993 Sideskirt
  8. 993 rearview mirrors
  9. Roof spoiler
  10. Stickers

Not even a dozen things modified and voilà – a 911 Turbo 930 that turns heads everywhere. Next step in the process of modification would be rocking up at bisimoto.com to have one of his famous twin-turbo engines installed. I’d love to have one similar to the engine I used for my Abarth 750 GT Bialbero chop.

Porsche 356 1600 GS Carrera idlers | photoshop chop by Sebastian Motsch (2018)

Porsche 356 1600 GS Carrera

A friend of mine posted my widebody Porsche 928 GTS on his instagram and told me the feedback was outstanding, demanding me to create more Porsche content. I told him that there are a quite a few Porsche photoshop chops in progress, but none of them close to being finished soon. But anyway, he inspired me to chop this export-spec Reutter-bodied 356a 1600 GS Carrera (T2). I applied the usual recipe of lowering the vehicle substantially and giving it a set of custom wheels. They are multi-piece items based on the originals. To spice it up and give it a nice twist I replaced the door handles with Mazda Miata NA items, removed the bumper bars and added a couple of stickers. Why Japanese you might wonder? Because I bet there is somebody in the land of the rising sun that has both the funds and the will to make my virtual creation come to life in reality.

Peugeot 505 V6 | photoshop chop by Sebastian Motsch (2016)

Peugeot 505 V6

Avid followers of my blogs VirtualModels and Drive-by Snapshots may already be aware that I have a sweet spot for classic French cars. Spending many a school holiday en vacences in France certainly is one of the possible reasons, yes. This and my preference of straight lines and low waistlines are perfectly combined in the Peugeot “05” generation. The greenhouse of the Peugeot 505 is more elegant than that of a Ford Granada Mk2 and at the same time almost as delicate as a Jaguar XJ‘s. This however becomes obvious only after the 505 is lowered, which also changes the overall appearence and makes the car look longer than it actually is. As with many cars from that era, there is no need to alter the body to get a great look. Just a few minor adjustments here and there… et voilá! C’est ça. Très bien.

PS: I do know that the classic Wolfrace wheels are a better fit on the early chrome bumper models, but I choose them anyway to offset the blacked-out trim pieces. Doesn’t hurt the stance either, does it? 😉

Renault R4 Rainbow Van

The Renault R4 has always been a vehicle that accepts many modifications to the body without looking too weird. I kept it simple by just removing the rear doors and windows, lowering the ride height and adding larger diameter wheels. Just a quick chop over the weekend for fun. Peace 🙂
